William James

William James (1842–1910) was an American philosopher and psychologist. He taught at Harvard University, initially in anatomy and physiology and later in psychology and philosophy. Together with Charles Sanders Peirce, he is regarded as one of the founders of philosophical pragmatism and made important contributions to modern empirical psychology. His influential works include the lecture “The Will to Believe” (1897) and the lecture series “Pragmatism” (1907).
