Rudolf Carnap (1891–1970) was a German philosopher and logician and a leading representative of logical empiricism and the Vienna Circle. He studied mathematics, physics, and philosophy in Freiburg and Jena. His major works include “The Logical Structure of the World” and “The Logical Syntax of Language.” From 1931 to 1935, he was an associate professor of natural philosophy at the German University in Prague. In 1930, he co-founded the journal Erkenntnis with Hans Reichenbach. Carnap emigrated to the United States in 1936 and taught in Chicago, Princeton, and Los Angeles. He died in California in 1970 as an American citizen.
