Johann Peter Hebel (1760–1826) was a German writer, teacher, and Protestant clergyman. He was born in Basel and died in Schwetzingen. He became known particularly for his poems written in the Alemannic dialect, collected in “Alemannische Gedichte,” and for “Schatzkästlein des rheinischen Hausfreundes,” a collection of calendar stories. Alongside his writing, Hebel worked as a teacher and later became director of the Karlsruhe Gymnasium; in 1819, he was appointed prelate of the Lutheran state church.
