Bettina von Arnim

Bettina von Arnim (1785–1859), born Elisabeth Brentano, was a German writer. She came from an artistic family and was the sister of the poet Clemens Brentano. In 1811 she married Achim von Arnim; they had seven children. She became known for “Goethes Briefwechsel mit einem Kinde” (1835), a work that established her reputation as a writer. Her other works include “Die Günderode” and, written with her daughter Gisela, the fairy-tale novel “Das Leben der Hochgräfin Gritta von Rattenzuhausbeiuns”. She was also engaged in social causes and political reform.
