E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776–1822), born Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann in Königsberg, was a German writer of the Romantic period. He studied law and worked as a lawyer and judge, while also pursuing music and the visual arts. He was active as a composer, conductor, music critic, draughtsman, and caricaturist. Out of admiration for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he replaced his third given name, Wilhelm, with Amadeus. His best-known works include The Sandman, The Golden Pot, Mademoiselle de Scuderi, The Devil’s Elixirs, and The Life and Opinions of Tomcat Murr.
