Giovanni Maio

Giovanni Maio (born 1964) studied medicine and philosophy in Freiburg, Strasbourg, and Hagen. A philosopher and physician, he also gained clinical experience. In 2006, he became director of the Institute for the Ethics and History of Medicine at the University of Freiburg and holder of its chair in medical ethics. In this capacity, he advised, among others, the German federal government, the German Medical Association, and the German Bishops’ Conference. His publications include “Mittelpunkt Mensch. Ethik in der Medizin,” “Macht und Ohnmacht des Wortes,” and “Für eine Ethik der Zuwendung.” In 2023, he received the German Pain Award.
