Karl Lehmann

Karl Lehmann (1936–2018), born in Sigmaringen, was a Catholic theologian and bishop. After working with Karl Rahner during the Second Vatican Council, he taught dogmatic theology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from 1968 to 1971 and dogmatic and ecumenical theology at the University of Freiburg from 1971 to 1983. He was Bishop of Mainz from 1983 to 2016. From 1987 to 2008, Lehmann served as chairman of the German Bishops’ Conference, and in 2001 he was elevated to the rank of cardinal. He held doctorates in philosophy and theology and published numerous theological works.
