T. S. Eliot (1888–1965) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and died in London. He studied at Harvard University, the Sorbonne, and Oxford. He later settled in England and became a British citizen in 1927. Alongside his work as a poet, Eliot worked as a teacher, bank clerk, and literary critic; he also edited the literary journal The Criterion. He is regarded as one of the major English-language poets of the 20th century.
