Wolfgang Hildesheimer

Wolfgang Hildesheimer (1916–1991) was a German writer, playwright, and visual artist. Born in Hamburg to Jewish parents, he emigrated via England to Palestine in 1933. Before turning to literature, he worked in fields including stage design, painting, graphic art, and advertising. In 1947, he served as an interpreter at the Nuremberg trials. He began publishing literary works in 1950 and joined Group 47 in 1951. His prose work “Tynset” received the Georg Büchner Prize and the Bremen Literature Prize in 1966. His biography “Mozart” (1977) later influenced the play and film “Amadeus”.
