Safiye Can was born in Offenbach am Main to Circassian parents. She studied philosophy, psychoanalysis and law in Frankfurt am Main. As an author, she published poetry and prose and translated from Turkish. Her works include the poetry collections “Kinder der verlorenen Gesellschaft” (2017), “Rose und Nachtigall” (2020) and “Poesie und Pandemie” (2021). In 2018, she also co-edited two issues of the journal “die horen” devoted to concrete and other playful forms of poetry. Can has worked as a guest lecturer at universities and led writing workshops for children and young people. Her honors include the Else Lasker-Schüler Poetry Prize and the Alfred Müller-Felsenburg Prize for Upright Literature, both awarded in 2016, as well as the Arp im Ohr literary fellowship from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in 2021.
