Peter Sprengel (born 1949) is a German scholar of literature and theatre. After studying German and Greek philology, he taught at the universities of Erlangen and Kiel and, from 1990 until his retirement in 2016, was Professor of Modern German Literature at Freie Universität Berlin. His research focuses on German-language literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as well as the work of Gerhart Hauptmann. His publications include the multi-volume History of German-Language Literature 1870–1918, biographies of Gerhart Hauptmann and Rudolf Borchardt, and studies and editions relating to Hauptmann.
