Hans Richard Brittnacher (born 1951) is a German scholar of literature. He studied in Marburg and Berlin and worked for several years as an editor in Italy. He subsequently earned his doctorate with the study “Ästhetik des Horrors. Gespenster, Vampire, Monster, Teufel und künstliche Menschen in der phantastischen Literatur” and his habilitation with “Erschöpfung und Gewalt. Opferphantasien in der Literatur des Fin de siècle.” Brittnacher was a professor of modern German literature at Freie Universität Berlin and held visiting professorships in Bern, Vienna, and Durham, USA. His fields of research include the fantastic, the intermediality of the fantastic, literature of otherness, and popular and genre culture. His publications include “Leben auf der Grenze” (2012).
