Michael Walter

Michael Walter (born 1951) is a German translator. He studied English and philosophy and worked as a freelance translator from 1978 onward. Over the course of his career, he translated more than 60 works in almost every literary genre, including texts by Lewis Carroll, George Orwell, Julian Barnes, Henry James and Herman Melville. His awards included the Johann-Heinrich-Voß Prize, the Heinrich-Maria-Ledig-Rowohlt Prize, the Johann-Friedrich-von-Cotta Prize and, in 2018, the European Translator’s Prize. He was a member of the German Academy for Language and Literature and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts.
