Matthias Warstat is a German theatre scholar. From 2008 to 2012, he held the chair of Theatre and Media Studies at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg; from 2012 onward, he taught theatre studies at Freie Universität Berlin. His research focuses on the theatre and cultural history of modernity, political theatre, and theatricality in society. His publications include “Theatrale Gemeinschaften. Zur Festkultur der Arbeiterbewegung 1918–33” (2005), “Krise und Heilung. Wirkungsästhetiken des Theaters” (2011), and, with Jan Lazardzig and Viktoria Tkaczyk, “Theaterhistoriografie. Eine Einführung” (2012). He also co-edited the “Metzler Lexikon Theatertheorie” (2005).
