Matthias Gauly studied agricultural sciences and veterinary medicine. In 2014, he began working at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, where mountain farming is among his areas of focus. His work deals in particular with the effects of livestock production systems on the environment, animal health, and economic performance. From 2016 to 2020, Gauly served as president of the European Federation of Animal Science.
