Martin Pollack

Martin Pollack (1944–2025) was an Austrian journalist, author and translator of Polish literature. He studied Slavic and Eastern European history and worked as a correspondent for the German magazine Der Spiegel in Vienna and Warsaw from 1987 to 1998. Among his best-known books are The Dead Man in the Bunker: A Report on My Father (2004), an examination of his family’s Nazi-tainted history, The Emperor of America: The Great Escape from Galicia (2010), Contaminated Landscapes (2014) and The Woman Without a Grave: Report on My Aunt (2019). Pollack received, among other honors, the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding, the Stanisław Vincenz Prize and the Johann Heinrich Merck Prize for Literary Criticism and Essays in 2018.
