Joseph Wittlin

Joseph Wittlin (1896–1976) was a writer, translator, and literary critic. He studied philosophy and modern philology in Vienna and Lviv, and served in the Austro-Hungarian army from 1916 to 1918. During the 1920s, he worked as a teacher, dramaturge, and critic before becoming a freelance writer. He emigrated to the United States in 1941. His best-known work is the novel The Salt of the Earth, the first part of the unfinished trilogy The Story of the Patient Infantryman. He also translated works including Homer’s Odyssey and books by Joseph Roth and Hermann Hesse into Polish.
