Jens Lieven (born 1972) studied history and German studies or German literature in Duisburg, Essen and Freiburg, followed by archival studies in Potsdam. He earned a doctorate in Essen in 2006 with a dissertation on the culture of remembrance of the counts of Cleves and Guelders in the High Middle Ages. From 2007, he taught the history of the early and High Middle Ages and historical auxiliary sciences at Ruhr University Bochum. His research focused on memoria, aristocratic and biographical studies, religious communities and monastic reform, as well as medieval forms of rule and remembrance. His publications include “Adel, Herrschaft und Memoria” (2008) and “Verortete Herrschaft” (2014).
