Hugo Dittberner, born in 1944 in Gieboldehausen near Göttingen, studied German, history and philosophy in Göttingen and received his doctorate in 1972 for a thesis on Heinrich Mann. Since his debut novel, Das Internat (1974), he published novels, short stories, poetry, essays and reviews. His works include Jacobs Sieg (1979), Geschichte einiger Leser (1990), Wolken und Vögel und Menschentränen (1995), Wasserelegien (1997) and Das Seevokabularium (2010). Dittberner received, among other distinctions, the Villa Massimo scholarship, the Lower Saxony Prize (1984) and the Berlin Literature Prize (1994).
