Michael Scheffel (born 1958) is a German literary scholar. He studied German, Romance studies and art history in Tübingen, Tours and Göttingen, earning his doctorate in Göttingen in 1988 and completing his habilitation there in 1995. From 2002 onward, he was Professor of Modern German Literary History and General Literary Studies at the University of Wuppertal; in 2008, he additionally became the university’s vice-rector for research, external funding and graduate support. His research has focused on realism and early modernism, metafictional narrative, narratology and theories of fictionality. His major works include “Magischer Realismus” and “Formen selbstreflexiven Erzählens”. Scheffel is a professor emeritus.
