Gerhard Sauder (born 1938) studied German, Romance studies, philosophy and art history at the universities of Heidelberg and Paris from 1958 to 1963. He began his career as a trainee and senior trainee teacher before becoming a research assistant at the German Department of Heidelberg University in 1966. He was appointed Akademischer Rat in 1969 and Akademischer Oberrat in 1971, and was awarded the title of professor in 1975. In 1976, Sauder became a full professor at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, where he taught until his retirement in 2006.
