David Anthony Durham was born in 1969 to parents from the Caribbean. After completing university, he taught at institutions including the University of Maryland and the University of Massachusetts. He also lived in Scotland with his family for several years. His debut novel, “Gabriel’s Story” (2001), and its successor, “Walk Through Darkness” (2002), were named New York Times Notable Books. His historical novel “Pride of Carthage,” about Hannibal, was published in 2005 and translated into numerous languages. “Acacia” marked Durham’s first venture into fantasy.
