Wolfgang Emmerich, born in Chemnitz in 1941, studied German, history and philosophy. From 1968 onward, he taught at universities in the United States and at the University of Tübingen. From 1978, he was Professor of Modern German Literary and Cultural History at the University of Bremen; he also held visiting professorships in the United States, Paris, Turin and Oxford. His publications include “Kleine Literaturgeschichte der DDR” (1981), “Lyrik des Exils” (editor, 1985), “Paul Celan” (1999), “Gottfried Benn” (2006) and “Nahe Fremde. Paul Celan und die Deutschen” (2020).
