Inge Stephan studied German, history, philosophy, politics and education in Hamburg and Clermont-Ferrand. After earning her doctorate in 1971 and passing the state examinations in 1972 and 1974, she worked at the University of Hamburg, first at its Department of History and from 1974 at its Department of Literary Studies. She became a professor at the University of Hamburg and moved to Humboldt University of Berlin in 1994, where she later held emerita status at the Institute of German Literature. Her research focused on literary and cultural history from the eighteenth century to the present, women’s literature, feminist literary studies and constructions of gender in literature. She published extensively on German literary history and gender studies.
