Werner Plumpe

Werner Plumpe (born 1954) is an economic historian. He studied history and economics in Bochum, earned his doctorate in 1985 and completed his habilitation in 1994. After holding a lectureship at Ruhr University Bochum and a visiting professorship at Keio University in Tokyo, he became a professor of economic and social history at Goethe University Frankfurt in 1999. From 2008 to 2012, he served as chair of the Association of Historians and Historians of Germany. His research focuses on modern economic and social history, as well as the history of business and industry. His publications include “Wirtschaftskrisen,” “Die Große Depression” and “Das kalte Herz.” In 2014, he received the Ludwig Erhard Prize for Economic Journalism.
