Ulrich Wilhelm, born in Munich in 1961, studied law at the universities of Passau and Munich. From 1981 to 1983, he also trained at the German School of Journalism in Munich, where he obtained an editorial diploma. During his studies and legal traineeship, he worked as a freelance journalist, including for Bayerischer Rundfunk, and as a Congressional Fellow at the U.S. Congress in Washington, D.C. Wilhelm later served as director-general of Bayerischer Rundfunk and represented ARD and ZDF on the Executive Board of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
