Sawsan Chebli

Sawsan Chebli (born 1978 in Berlin) is a German politician. The twelfth child of a Palestinian refugee family, she lived stateless for 15 years before her family obtained German citizenship. Chebli studied political science and joined the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in 2001. After working in the offices of members of the German Bundestag, she became an adviser for intercultural affairs at Berlin’s Senate Department for the Interior and Sport in 2010. From 2014, she served as deputy spokesperson to Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier. From 2016 to 2021, she was Berlin’s representative to the federal government and State Secretary for Civic Engagement and International Affairs.
