Sama Maani was born in Graz and grew up in Austria, Germany, and Iran. He studied medicine in Vienna and philosophy in Zurich, and trained as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in Graz. As a writer, he published the novel “Ungläubig” (2014), the essay collections “Respektverweigerung” (2015), “Warum wir Linke über den Islam nicht reden können” (2019), and “Worüber man als Jude nicht schreiben sollte” (2020), as well as the novels “Teheran Wunderland” (2018) and “Žižek in Teheran” (2021). In 2004, he received the “schreiben zwischen den kulturen” literary prize; in 2007, he was awarded an Austrian state scholarship for “Ungläubig”.
