Peter Moser studied history after completing a vocational apprenticeship in Switzerland and Ireland. In 1995, he received his doctorate from the University of Bern with a dissertation on rural society in western Ireland. He was among the initiators of the Archive of Rural History in Bern, founded in 2002, and served as its director. From 2009 to 2019, he was president of the Swiss Society for Rural History.
