Michael Sowa

Michael Sowa, born in Berlin in 1945, is a German painter and illustrator. He studied art education at Berlin’s Hochschule der Künste and worked as a freelance artist from the 1970s onward. His illustrations appeared in publications including Titanic, Die Zeit and The New Yorker, as well as in numerous books and on book covers. He illustrated works by authors including Axel Hacke, Daniel Glattauer and Hans Magnus Enzensberger. He also contributed artwork to films, including The Fabulous World of Amélie. Among his awards are the 1995 Olaf Gulbransson Prize, the 2004 Berlin Book Prize in the children’s-book category and the 2013 Göttinger Elch.
