Jan Ilhan Kizilhan is an Orientalist and psychologist specializing in transcultural psychiatry and traumatology. He comes from the Kurdish part of Turkey. At Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University, he headed the Institute for Transcultural Health Research; he also worked at the Institute of Psychotherapy and Psychotraumatology at the University of Duhok in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Kizilhan worked with victims of war and terrorism, including Yazidi women and girls, and trained professionals in several countries. In recognition of his commitment to human rights, he received the Women’s Rights Award and the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg in 2016. In 2017, the American Jewish Committee honored him with its Ramer Award for Courage in the Defense of Democracy.
