Horacio Quiroga

Horacio Quiroga (1878–1937) was born in Salto, Uruguay, the son of the Argentine consul. After spending his childhood and youth in Uruguay, he lived for most of his life in Argentina. He is regarded as one of the founders of modern Latin American literature and was particularly known for his short prose. He named Edgar Allan Poe, Guy de Maupassant, and Rudyard Kipling as important literary influences. Quiroga died by suicide in 1937 after being diagnosed with cancer.
