Hans Frey

Hans Frey (1949–2024) was a German scholar of German studies, teacher, former member of the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament, author, and literary publicist. He was best known for his nonfiction and monographs on science fiction, including “Der galaktische Voltaire – Die Welten des Isaac Asimov,” “Philosophie und Science Fiction,” and books on Alfred Bester, J. G. Ballard, and James Tiptree Jr. He also wrote a history of German-language science fiction in three volumes: “Fortschritt und Fiasko,” “Aufbruch in den Abgrund,” and “Optimismus und Overkill.” He received the Kurd Laßwitz Award in 2021 for the first two volumes.
