Friedhelm Rathjen

Friedhelm Rathjen (born 1958) is a German translator, literary scholar, writer, and literary critic. He studied journalism, German studies, and English studies in Münster. From 1983 onward, he published literary criticism, and from 1989 he translated English-language literature, including works by James Joyce, Herman Melville, Gertrude Stein, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Mark Twain. Rathjen also published extensively on Arno Schmidt and served as editor of the journal “Bargfelder Bote” from 2009. His own publications include a monograph on Joyce (2004) and the prose collection “Vom Glück” (2007). In 2013, he received the Paul Celan Prize for his translations from English.
