Vita Sackville-West (1892–1962) was an English writer, poet, biographer and travel writer. She published more than fifty books, including novels, poetry collections and biographies, and wrote a gardening column for the Observer for many years. In 1913 she married the diplomat and writer Harold Nicolson. Together they acquired and designed the garden at Sissinghurst Castle in Kent. Her close friendship with Virginia Woolf inspired Woolf’s novel Orlando. Sackville-West received the Hawthornden Prize in 1926 and 1933.
