Gabriele Haefs

Gabriele Haefs (born 1953 in Wachtendonk in the Lower Rhine region) studied folklore, comparative linguistics, Celtic studies and Scandinavian studies, and earned a doctorate in folklore. From 1983 onward, she worked as a translator and editor, translating, among other languages, from English, Irish, Norwegian, Danish and Swedish. Authors whose works she translated include Jostein Gaarder, Anne Holt and Ingvar Ambjørnsen. Her work received such honors as the Gustav Heinemann Peace Prize, the Willy Brandt Prize and the German Youth Literature Prize; in 2008, she received that prize’s special award for her overall contribution as a translator. She was also appointed a Knight First Class of the Norwegian Order of St. Olav.
