Thomas Elsaesser

Thomas Elsaesser (1943–2019) was a German film scholar and professor of film and television studies at the University of Amsterdam. His research focused on film theory and history, genre theory, Hollywood and European auteur cinema, media archaeology, and new media theory. From 2013, he was also a visiting professor at Columbia University. His publications include “Film Theory: An Introduction through the Senses” (with Malte Hagener) and “Film History as Media Archaeology”.
