Tanja Handels, born in Aachen in 1971, studied English, comparative literature and theatre studies in Aachen, Cologne and Birmingham, as well as literary translation from English in Munich. She initially worked as an editor and project manager before translating British and American fiction and nonfiction, including works by Zadie Smith, Bernardine Evaristo, Anna Quindlen, Elizabeth Gilbert and Toni Morrison. She also taught literary translation as a lecturer and instructor. Her work received several grants and awards, including a 2018 working grant from the Free State of Bavaria and the Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt Prize in 2019.
