Ta-Nehisi Coates, born in Baltimore in 1975, is an American journalist and author. His book *Between the World and Me* received the National Book Award in 2015. With his essay “The Case for Reparations,” Coates contributed to a nationwide debate on the legacy of slavery. His other works include the essay collection *We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy*. *The Water Dancer* was his first novel.
