Swetlana Geier (1923–2010), born in Kyiv, was a prominent translator of Russian literature into German. Her work included translations of texts by Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Bunin, Andrei Sinyavsky, Andrei Bely, Mikhail Bulgakov, Andrei Platonov, and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. She became particularly known for her new translations of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s major novels. Her work received numerous awards, and she was awarded honorary doctorates by the universities of Freiburg and Basel.
