Stefan Paulus studied modern and contemporary history, art history, and classical archaeology in Augsburg and Regensburg. In 2012, he completed his doctorate under Gabriele Winker with an intersectional dispositif analysis of work–life balance measures and gender regimes. He subsequently worked, among other positions, as a research associate in the Work, Gender and Technology research group at Hamburg University of Technology. His research focuses include labor and gender studies, intersectionality, and governmentality studies. He has taught and conducted research at FHS St. Gallen.
