Sarah Spiekermann is an economist and professor at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. She headed its Institute of Business Administration and Business Informatics and founded the Privacy and Sustainable Computing Lab in 2016. Earlier in her career, she worked for the Silicon Valley company Openwave Systems, as a strategy consultant at A.T. Kearney, and as director of the Internet Economics Research Center at Humboldt University of Berlin. Her research on privacy, technology design, and ethical issues in information technology made her a prominent critic of the IT industry. In 2016, she led the IEEE’s first standardization process devoted to ethical technology design.
