Samuel Beckett (1906–1989) was an Irish writer. Born in Dublin, he studied French, Italian and modern literature at Trinity College and later taught English in Paris. He wrote drama, prose and poetry, first in English and later also in French. His best-known works include the novel *Molloy* and the play *Waiting for Godot*, which brought him international recognition in 1952. During the Second World War, Beckett was involved in the French Resistance. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1969.
