Primo Levi

Primo Levi (1919–1987) was born in Turin and studied chemistry. In late 1943, he was arrested as a Jew and a member of the Resistance, interned at the Fossoli camp near Modena, and deported to Auschwitz in February 1944. He survived and returned to Italy after a long odyssey. Levi worked in the chemical industry until 1977 and then became a full-time writer. In 1947, he published his autobiographical book *If This Is a Man*. His notable works also include *The Truce*, *The Drowned and the Saved*, novels, short stories, and poetry. His books were translated into numerous languages and received important literary awards. Levi died in Turin in 1987.
