Pierre Drieu la Rochelle

Pierre Drieu la Rochelle (1893–1945) was a French novelist, essayist, journalist, and political writer. Born in Paris, he initially studied political science and served as a frontline soldier in the First World War. After the war, he published novels, essays, and political writings; he was initially associated with the Surrealists before developing fascist and pro-European political ideas. During the Vichy regime, he collaborated with the German occupation authorities. From 1940 until 1943 or 1944, he edited the journal Nouvelle Revue Française. Drieu la Rochelle died by suicide in March 1945. In 2012, he was included in the French classics series Bibliothèque de la Pléiade.
