Paul McAuley was born in Stroud, England, in 1955. He worked for several years as a lecturer in botany at the University of St Andrews before turning to writing. His debut novel, Four Hundred Million Stars, was published in 1988 and won the Philip K. Dick Award. McAuley is regarded as a prominent British science-fiction author. His work explores subjects including distant futures, nanotechnology, biotechnology and alternative history. His novels have received several international literary awards.
