Markus Gabriel (born 1980) is a German philosopher. He studied in Bonn, Heidelberg, Lisbon, and New York, received his doctorate in 2005, and completed his habilitation in 2008. In 2009, he took up a professorship in epistemology and the philosophy of the modern and contemporary periods at the University of Bonn. His academic work there included directing the International Center for Philosophy and the interdisciplinary Center for Science and Thought. His notable books include *Why the World Does Not Exist*, *Moral Progress in Dark Times*, and *The Sense of Thought*. *Why the World Does Not Exist* remained on bestseller lists for many weeks in 2013.
