Karim El-Gawhary was born in Munich in 1963. From 1991 onward, he worked as a Middle East correspondent for several German-language newspapers. Before that, he spent five years as a representative of the ARD broadcasting studio in Cairo; from 2004, he headed the ORF Middle East bureau there. El-Gawhary received the Concordia Press Award in 2011, was named Foreign Correspondent of the Year in 2012 and Journalist of the Year in Austria in 2013. In 2018, he received the Axel Corti Prize.
