Kai Maaz is a sociologist and professor of sociology specializing in education systems and society at Goethe University Frankfurt. He served as director of the Department of Structure and Governance of the Education System at the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF) in Frankfurt am Main and as the institute’s managing director. His research areas include educational monitoring, the governance of education systems, social, ethnic and gender disparities in educational attainment, school structure and school development, and the evaluation of educational system transformation processes.
