Julia Encke

Julia Encke (born 1971) studied modern German literature, Romance studies and comparative literature in Freiburg, Toulouse and Munich, and earned a doctorate on the First World War. Her dissertation was published as “Augenblicke der Gefahr. Der Krieg und die Sinne 1914–1934.” After an internship in the culture section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, she worked as a freelance literary critic and was a member of the Süddeutsche Zeitung’s arts and culture section from 2001 to 2005. She then joined the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, where she headed the literary section from 2015 and the arts and culture section from 2020. Her books include “Charisma und Politik. Warum unsere Demokratie mehr Leidenschaft braucht” (2014) and “Wer ist Michel Houellebecq? Porträt eines Provokateurs” (2017).
